Announcing Girls U10/U12 Travel Hockey (Birth Year 2005-2008)

Simsbury Youth Hockey is pleased to announce our plans for a Girls U10/U12 Travel Team in 2017-18

We are pleased to announce our ability to field a U12/U10 combined age group travel team in the coming season.  Spring tryout results have invited several players to this team, with an excellent coaching staff already on board to lead us through a fun season.   With the goal of growing our program even further, we have opened two registrations to identify additional players.  A Girls U12 and Girls U10 registration will remain open through September 1st.  All registrants will be placed on this combined age group team.

This team is open to players with birth years 2005/2006 (U12) and 2007/2008 (U10) and will play in the Connecticut Girls Hockey League (CGHL) to further develop the Girls Youth Hockey Program for Simsbury Youth Hockey.  This skill appropriate combined team will focus on team and skills development while having fun in a competitive, recreational hockey setting.

In addition to playing CGHL girls teams across the state,  the team will also fill their game schedule with local co-ed house teams (including SYHA Squirt/PeeWee House) and, if appropriate, Squirt travel teams within the Connecticut Hockey Conference (CHC).  The team will practice twice a week and will participate in a minimum of 15 games.  They will also play in a minimum of one tournament in the coming season.

Interested players should register in the appropriate age group (Girls U12 or Girls U10).  Our coaching staff and final team roster will be announced in the fall.

Tommy Cross Featured on Gotta Love CT Hockey

Tommy Cross, one of Simsbury's own, recounts his path to the pro's (including his experience with Simsbury Youth Hockey)!  Click HERE to check out this great interview on Gotta Love CT Hockey!

About Tommy Cross:

Tommy started his hockey career with Simsbury Youth Hockey playing Mite through Bantam.  He played for Simsbury High School and Westminster School prior to completing four seasons at Boston College where he won the NCAA National Championship in 2010 and 2012.  Tommy was named Assistant Captain in his junior season and then Captain his senior season with the Eagles.

Tommy was drafted by Boston in the second round (35th overall) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

In his AHL career, Tommy has played in 291 games with Providence, amassing 23 goals and 75 assists for 98 points with 330 penalty minutes and a plus-35 rating.  Tommy saw his first NHL action in 2015-16 with Boston and registered his first career NHL point, an assist in the Bruins' 5-3 win at Arizona on October 17, 2015.  Most recently, Cross was recalled from the Providence Bruins to join the NHL Boston Bruins in Stanley Cup Playoff Game 3 vs. the Ottawa Senators.

Many of our own SYHA players have had the opportunity to skate with Tommy during his surprise SYHA visits or in the summer months at the Ben Smith Skills Development Camp and the Tommy Cross Defensive Skills Camp.  Tommy is a fantastic role model for our players.  He consistently demonstrates his true passion for hockey by helping to further develop young players and by proving that hard work and a positive attitude pays off!

Free Summer Skills Sessions Schedule
We are pleased to announce that once again we will implement a Summer Skills Series to give all of our registered players  (Mite through Bantam) an opportunity to continue their skill development during the summer months.  Beginning July 11th, SYHA will offer a weekly Goalie Clinic as well as a Skating and Skills Session for our 2017-18 registered SYHA players.  All sessions will take at the ISCC Olympic Rink.

The Goalie Clinic will utilize 1/3 to 1/2 of the ice depending on numbers.  The skating players will utilize the other available portion of the ice under a skating and skills theme working on power skating, stick skills stations and small area games.  Director of Coaching, is working on gathering the on-ice instructors for the various age groups.  The schedule is below and will remain posted on the SYHA website.

These sessions are for registered 2017-18 players only.  All registered house and travel players welcome (Mite through Bantam age groups).  There is no charge for these ice sessions.

This year, we will require sign up for each session to assist our coaches with the development of practice plans. Please be sure to sign up for each session you plan to attend.

New Uniforms for SYHA Travel Teams

The moment we have all been waiting for: New Uniforms!

If you recall, the results of the parent survey last season concluded that the SYHA community would like new uniforms, upgrading quality but not changing the overall image.  There was an emphasis on keeping our team logo the same.

The Uniform Committee has been working with the Board to research various options for new uniforms in the 2017-18 season, taking into consideration the survey results while controlling annual costs.  Utilizing the results and commentary from the parent survey, the Committee evaluated various designs within an appropriate price point and created 4 options.  The winning design is attached below.

New jerseys will be provided to all travel divisions in the 2017-18 season!  Players in the house division will utilize existing jerseys, allowing us to furnish players with the newest and highest quality jerseys from that inventory.

Please note that player requests to receive their “preferred” jersey number will be limited as your player’s required jersey size will take precedence over his/her requested jersey number.  While we understand that our players have their ‘favorite’ numbers, we ask that parents help us to reinforce that SYHA can only work with the inventory we have. Please remind your player(s) of the importance of team pride - the logo on the front matters a lot more than the number on the back!  We appreciate your support with this transition.

James A. Stover Scholarship Applications

SYHA Families:

In October 2003, James A. Stover, an SYHA skater, passed away tragically in a sudden accident while playing on a beach at Block Island.  He was seven years old.  Among James's many passions was hockey, and his zest for life and happy attitude were always with him on the ice.

To honor his spirit, the Simsbury Youth Hockey Association created a scholarship fund to enable any player to participate in the SYHA program, regardless of financial ability.  Many parents and players have generously donated to this fund and SYHA raises funds throughout the year to enable as many players a possible to benefit from this generosity.

In order to qualify, a family needs only to print and complete the application form attached below and include a copy of their previous year's IRS Form 1040.

James A. Stover Scholarship Application

The application is reviewed - in strictest confidentiality - by a three member sub-panel of the SYHA Board of Directors consisting of the President, Vice President of Operations and Treasurer.  Scholarships are awarded strictly based on financial need.  Applications for the 2017-18 season should be submitted no later than Monday September 11th.

If you would like to make a donation to support the Stover Scholarship, please click here:

2017-18 A Team Coaches Announced
We are very excited to announce the A team coaches for the Bantam, PeeWee and Squirt A teams for the 2017-18 season.  Additional information about our Mite travel team format, including the named Mite A team coach, will be provided before the fall.

Simsbury Youth Hockey has always prided itself on the high caliber of coaches who volunteer in our program.   Across all teams, our coaches' unwavering commitment to player development and teaching the game is what makes SYHA one of the strongest programs in Connecticut.  Looking to next season, we are thrilled to have acquired new and impressive volunteer talent and expertise to strengthen our coaching bench even further:

2017-18 A Team Coaches

Bantam A - Keith Balsewicz, Head Coach.  Keith recently joined SYHA as Director of Coaching and brings a wealth of coaching experience to our program.  Keith’s hockey career started with Simsbury Youth Hockey.  He played for Simsbury High School before playing two years for the Western Hockey League and Saskatchewan Junior Hockey Leagues.  Keith holds a USA Hockey Level 4 certification and a CIAC 5 year coaching certificate.  Keith was an assistant coach for five years for the Ramapo Rangers in Ramapo NY (Metropolitan Junior Hockey League) before serving as the PeeWee A Head Coach and Director for The Harvey School and PeeWee Elite Team Head Coach for Westchester Express in Elmsford, NY.  Keith has coached at all levels - Mite through Bantam - beginning with his son Aleksander’s hockey years with SYHA.  Most recently, Keith served as Assistant Coach for five years for the Simsbury High School Boys Varsity Hockey team with responsibility for forwards, special teams, and video breakdowns.  Keith is a great addition to our coaching staff and he's looking forward to his return to SYHA ice!

PeeWee A - Bob Baillargeon, Head Coach.  A level 4 USA Hockey certified coach, Bob’s coaching experience spans over 20 years from Mite through Junior hockey leading multiple teams to championship titles including a Silver Stick International Championship as Head Coach of the PeeWee AA Columbus Cardinals in Columbus, OH in 2005.  From 2003 - 2005, Bob also coached in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Roller Hockey League as Head Coach leading teams to a U10 Columbus Cardinals AAU National Championship, Team USA U12 World Cup Championship, and U12 Team USA North International Championship title.  In 2006, Bob and his family moved home to Enfield, CT where he joined the New England Junior Falcons organization as Head Coach of the PeeWee and Bantam Elite teams for three years, leading a Bantam Elite team to the League Championship title in 2008.  Bob’s experience also includes private lessons and skills clinics while acting as a talent scout for various teams and prep schools.  Most recently, over the past two seasons, Bob was an Assistant Coach for the Bantam Elite (2016-17) and PeeWee Elite (2015-16) teams with the New England Junior Falcons (now Mass/Conn United).  He would share that one of his greatest personal accomplishments is having coached and developed his son Robbie - a 5th round NHL Draft Pick for the Ottawa Senators, a full scholarship player at Boston University from 2013 - 2016, and a graduate player for Arizona State University finishing his college career tied for team lead in points and assists.  Bob's playing experience includes youth hockey through prep school.  He continues to play recreational hockey with his passion for coaching on the forefront - he looks forward to joining the Simsbury Youth Hockey community!

Squirt A - Matt Petras, Head Coach Matt has been a valued SYHA coach for the past 3 years in our Mite, Squirt and PeeWee divisions.  He also serves on the SYHA Board of Directors as Midget Division Director.  Matt’s SYHA coaching career began as an Assistant Coach for the Squirt A1 team in 2014-15.  In 2015-16, he was Head Coach of the Mite A team while helping to lead the Squirt A team to a Tier II State Championship title as an Assistant Coach.  This past season, Matt was an Assistant Coach for the PeeWee A and Squirt A teams, where he was proud to support the Squirt A team as they reclaimed their Tier II State Championship title, finishing their season as finalists in the New England Regional Championship.  Prior to moving to Connecticut, Matt coached for two years for the Irish Youth Hockey League in South Bend, IN.  Matt holds a Level 3 USA Hockey certification.  Matt’s playing career began with State College Youth Hockey in State College, PA.  He advanced to play two years for the Eastern Hockey League's Philadelphia Junior Flyers.  Matt also played for The Gunnery School in Washington, CT for two years prior to playing one season of Division III hockey for Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, IL.  He and his wife Kara have three SYHA players - Ty (PeeWee), Ben (Squirt) and Kamryn (Mite).
